You might have only just heard of her, but fear not, Exposed has already hooked up with Mercury Prize 2009 winner Speech Debelle.
Prior to September 2009, London born hip-hop sensation Speech Debelle was virtually unknown. However with a Mercury Prize nomination earlier this year and sales of her debut ‘Speech Therapy’ reaching a near, not too shabby, 3000 copies, the stage was set for one of the biggest underdog wins in recent Mercury history. Fighting off competition from the hotly tipped Florence and the Machine, rising stars Friendly Fires, and the arena filling Kasabian, Speech’s world is about to turn upside down. With the press hot on her heels, and a trip up North later this month; playing Sheffield Plug on September 26th, we caught up with Speech for a quick natter before the superstardom kicks in.
Congratulations on your album and the Mercury win. How does it feel?
How does it feel? Wonderful!
Has all the hardwork started to pay off?
Yea definitely. When we first heard the nominees, obviously we wished good luck to everyone, but we knew we deserved it. It’s all about belief. When you know you’ve got a strong product, one that you believe in, it’s great for people to take notice.
Well you have been writing songs since your early teens
Yea, but at first I didn’t have any confidence in my work, so I didn’t tell anybody. But if you know you’ve got something good, then you’ve got to believe in yourself.
How would you describe the album?
The UK needs this album. I know that must sound really egotistical, I’m aware of that. But I do believe it.

I can work with that. That’s a very nice thing to hear.
How will the prize money and more importantly, the attention of the Mercury Prize affect you?
That reminds me, I still need to go to the bank and cash the cheque today.
So you’re coming to Sheffield Plug in a few weeks, what should we expect?
Anyone who knows the album will know what to expect. But we have a full band: double bass, percussion, acoustic guitar and we play a really lively version of the album. We extend some of the songs, extra grooves added, just because we feel like it. Just because it feels good at the time. We’re not robots, there’s no machines involved in my life. It’s not programmed. We go with the flow.

And finally, any tips for next year’s Mercury hopefuls?
Whatever idea you have, you’ve got to go for it and make it work. When I walked into my record label I said I wanted to make a hip-hop version of Tracy Chapman. Everyone was trying to tell me different. So then I had to prove it. You have to talk the talk, and then walk the walk as well.
I recently caught up for a chat with Al McKay and Al Montfort from Melbourne’s Dick Diver about what’s up with their name, plans for their upcoming EP and why they are making such an impact in Melbourne’s music scene lately.

So what’s up with the name Dick Diver? It’s a character from an F. Scott Fitzgerald book… is it? Nah we just like the alliteration, all the Melbourne bands start with D. The Drones, the Devastations, Dan Kelly… Fucking love all the D bands. There’s already a few good ones, Darling Downs, double D as well. We just like the letter. We watched Sesame Street one morning and it was presented by the letter D. Nah yeah but it’s a character in a book.
What book? Ah I’ve never read it… Tender is the Night.
How do you describe your sound? I usually say like we are like a wimpy band or something, we’re like Australian pop. 80s Australian pop. Maybe a bit like The Velvet Underground but a bit more rock n’ roll. It’s like the Velvet Underground crossed with fucking Eddie Cochran, crossed with Jerry Lee Lewis.
Any other Melbourne bands that you get compared too? At the moment I really like The Twerps, we always get compared to them by friends. I guess we don’t really compare ourselves to other bands that much but yeah The Twerps come up a lot.
So you pretty much just do your own thing? Al (bass) since you play in a couple other bands is there any preference when it comes to song writing? Well I don’t write any songs for Dick Diver, I just write the songs for the other bands so I don’t really have to worry about it I can just kind of go along and do whatever.
So Al (guitar) you write the songs mostly? Yeah I write all of the songs. Ruben writes none! Hahaha! Nah, Ruben and I write the songs. He sings the ones he’s written and I do mine. Sometimes we share a bit, but usually yeah.
Any lyrical themes you kind of stick too? Not really, I dunno. We just kind of write songs about what we see. Try and get a few gags in there. Yeah you gotta have gags. Like how did the Michael Jackson song come about because that had different lyrics first didn’t it? Yeah it did, that one came about from this poem that I ripped off from this guy called Frank O’Hara and I was just thinking about all the media frenzy of Michael Jackson and how ridiculous it was with people feeling really close to him when they never knew him, so dumb. It’s a new song called “Michael Jackson” or “The Day Michael Jackson Died”.
You’ve got some recordings up on Myspace but do you have anything coming out for release? We’ve got an EP that’s been recorded and mastered and mixed, it’s all in the pipeline to come out in about November. That was done with Mikey from Eddy Current Suppression Ring, he’s recorded pretty much everyone in Melbourne by now. It’s kind of ridiculous. Yeah and he’s gotten so much better, so good. Yeah it’s amazing, he’s done The UV Race, Al’s other band. He did Straight Jacket, my other band, years ago which was really good. Our Myspace has some of it but is mostly stuff we’ve done ourselves and a couple Mikey’s done.
How did recording with Mikey come about? My old band, well we still play, Straightjacket Nation used to play a lot with Eddy Current Suppression Ring and go on tour and he recorded us about four years ago so I’ve known him through that and he recorded UV Race last year and I was stoked on it. So we asked him and also Max Kohane from Agents of Abhorrence who helped record the Dick Diver stuff as well.
So that’s coming out on Chapter Music? How did that happen? We played a show with Guy Blackman [Chapter Music founder] at The Birmingham Hotel earlier in the year and he liked our stuff so we kind of became friends with him and now they are putting out our EP for us. I really like a lot of the other stuff on Chapter too.
Yeah you guys are playing Chapterfest too yeah? Yeah it should be really good and they’re just awesome dudes as well.
How have you guys used the internet to promote yourselves? You’ve got your own blog too right? Yeah, haha, it’s not very active. I think it’s got like four posts on it. It started one night when Rub got really drunk and got home and started writing some shit up there for fun and then it I dunno, I think we were trying to copy The UV Race because they’ve got a really funny blog. It’s more just like for our friends and stuff. Yeah we need to put up more photos and stuff though. Myspace stuff is just to let people know about gigs and so they can hear us. Yeah that’s really good for getting shows and keeping in contact with people and stuff.
So have you had much contact via your myspace/blog? Yeah locally I think that’s how the bands around Melbourne get shows together. Someone will be putting on a night and they can just email around looking for bands or asking their friends. Email places looking where they can play together, it kinda all works out which is pretty cool.
Have you been written about much in press yet? I always look at the reviews in street press, I’m a bit vain or something like that. I always wanna know but I always like it when there is a bad review because you always remember it cause they always try and put themselves out there. Yeah I always like the bad reviews but yeah we get reviewed or whatever, have we done any other interviews? We did a bit of a thing on Mess and Noise and a thing for a blog called The White Heart Lane. But that wasn’t much of an interview. That was more of a photo thing. Yeah that’s a real cool thing. Haley from Super Wild Horses and a friend of hers, it’s a cool blog. What she did was she gave us a disposable camera and when we went on tour to Sydney we took all these photos and then we had to write captions for them and do a little interview. It was a cool idea and we got some good photos. And some not so good photos. One good one, yeah I was trying to get a photo of a cat smoking a cigarette but the flash wasn’t working so there’s about ten blank photos. There’s some good ones, there’s one where Al looks like a male model at Bondi. I can’t wait to see that photo, I think I’m gonna mount that on my wall.
You’ve got a lot of shows coming up do you think that’s because of the internet or because of personal connections? Because we’re fucking good. Hahaha, nah I reckon it’s both. There’s a lot of personal connections and also because we’ve been playing so much that people have seen us and at first most of the shows were like with people that we knew like people that Steph (drummer) knew because she was in another band called Love of Science Fiction and just people I knew from UV Race and Straight Jacket and now we just play heaps.
So you’ve both played in and play in some other bands too? I play in another band with some friends called Mit Walt which is more like a country kind of Bob Dylan-y sort of thing. They’re fucking sick. Ken Dalton or something… With a friend of mine, we’re trying to get her off her arse to do her own thing for ages because she’s got like a really really great voice but that’s just kind of like a fun thing. Rub and I played in a couple of shit bands before Dick Diver which will remain nameless. Gun Alley, hahaha. We only did a few shows and stuff, kind of cut our teeth on something.
Do you guys have a problem with people getting your music for free? The way I see it is people that are into music are, if they like something, are gonna go out and buy it anyway but it’s a good way to get people into it. Otherwise the more people listen to it the more people that people are gonna go and buy it. The old chicken and egg thing. I’ve got no problem with people posting shit up. I just want to be like the Arctic Monkeys and play at Madison Square Garden. When I download an mp3 or something of a band I really like or a bootleg or something it just makes me want to buy it more when the actual release comes out. Do you reckon it’s pretty good will with people around? People just want to have that material thing in their hands. Yeah the artwork and the whole record thing. According to Chapter, record sales went up double last year over CDs. I think there’s a lot of people liking that the romance of something to hold in your hands rather than just something you have gotten from the internet.
So your EP is coming out on vinyl then? Yeah it will come with a 7 inch which has 3 songs on it and then there will be a CD that will have 6 songs on it as well. So there’s 6 songs all together, the three that will be on the vinyl will be on the CD as well.
I see that you are playing with Stephen Malkmus… how did that happen? Well a guy Woody who does this radio program Wig Wam Bam I think he was doing the tour and he was looking for some supports and I think he handed over the CD to Malkmus to see if we’d be a good support… And he said he loved it. I heard. Yeah he said it is the fucking best band ever. Me and Steph at separate times both bugged Woody like “if there’s not a Melbourne support then can we get on it?” And by that stage he had already sent on the CD. So yeah it was just really cool. I know Al and Rub are huge fans. Especially Rub, I hope he can speak when turns up. Yeah big fan.
Any plans for a proper national tour or anything? Maybe, we haven’t really discussed it. Maybe when the EP comes out, November/December or something. We thought about doing a few shows around rural Victoria and then yeah we’ll see what happens from there. Al’s going away over Summer though, to Indonesia to do some work over there. And to drink Coconuts. Yeah we’d all love to and maybe even go to the states at some stage, I know that UV Race are playing over there so it kind of makes sense to tie it in. A lot of pipe dreams. A lot of pipe dreams.
It would seem that my recent Chino XL interview is causing quite a stir over on allhiphop.com. Whilst there has been a lot of interest in the piece, perhaps partly due to the title “I’d S**t on Shakespeare,” many feel that perhaps Chino’s comments on Shakespeare were not justfied.
The controversial statement, “If Shakespeare was alive today, I’d s**t on any work he had and it would all rhyme and it would all make sense; it would be a complete story in 16 bars…,” has caused many to criticise Chino. Some people seemed to have overlooked the fact that Chino explicitly mentioned the importance of reading the works of people like Shakespeare and that he was not trying to undermine their significance. The statement in question, as he also explicitly maintained, was not referring to his own lyrical ability, but rather hip hop as a collective.
On face value, yes Chino did take on Shakespeare, but if you look a little deeper and reflect on his comments, then it becomes immeadiately clear that he is actually explaining the cultural impact of hip hop lyrics. In fact, he was completely accurate, as no matter how significant Shakespeare is in literary history, hip hop lyrics hold far more relevancy and have a far greater influence on the average allhiphop.com reader than the works of the bard. In modern society, surely it would be rather naive to believe that Shakespeare carries more weight than the lyrics of many modern artists. After all, I bet you can recite 2pac or Jay-Z lyrics, but how many of you can quote a passage from Hamlet?

Recently gospel, or secular, or whatever you want to classify him as, artist Tonex gave an interesting interview on “The Lexi Show” about his life and a the controversy surrounding his life and the allegations of homosexuality. I feel like the interview left a lot to be desired, but I’ve included the clips below so you can judge for yourself. It’s about 25 minutes of video, but it’s very intriguing to watch. Take a look.

I wanted to give a couple of observances. Keep in mind that these are just my opinions and not at all meant to judge him as a man. My observances are made in order to be able to learn something from his experiences.
First, and this isn’t directly related to Tonex, but why must Christian’s production and spirit of excellence be so lacking sometimes? I just annoys me when the quality of the product we produce to represent the creator of all is something that is laughable if it were to come from a mainstream media source. But for Christians it’s acceptable? Absolutely ridiculous.
There was one point in the interview when Tonex was asked if he struggled with homosexuality, to which he replied, “Not struggled. It wasn’t a struggle.” To which I wanted to ask, “Well, what was it?” but no, the host avoids that all together. She just moves on. Really? Lexi needs to learn to ask the hard questions and stop skirting around the real issues at hand. Ask the man if he is in an actively gay relationship. Ask him if he sees homosexuality as a sin. Ask him about the fruit in his life. Ask him what he would say to those who say he shouldn’t pastor. Ask him where he finds biblical justification for his actions. There were more than a few times that I wanted to see a follow up question to something he said, but to no avail.
It may seem like I’m quick to jump on Lexi for her interview skills, but the reality is, she mirrors our perspectives and responses as a church. We need to stop being scared to bluntly, openly and honestly address the situation, especially when sin is involved. We have to stop dancing around sin because sin isn’t dancing around us; it’s confronting us squarely in the fact every day of our lives! If we play around with sin, sin will play around with us.
There were several statements made throughout the interview that lead me to believe that Tonex doesn’t see homosexuality as a sin. Why do I say that? Because he doesn’t see his issues with homosexuality as a struggle. When you don’t see your sin as a struggle, that’s a clear indication you don’t view it as sin. I can’t struggle with something good. I only struggle against that which is bad. You don’t hear people say, “I’m struggling to do the wrong thing.” That makes no sense.
I have a problem with his thinking that homosexuality isn’t a sin. I’m not even going to quote scriptures right now; let’s us look at the act of gay male sex from a strictly physical perspective. Why are you entering an orifice that was only designed for things to exit? Male and female sex organs were designed to go together; you can tell that by looking at their design. If homosexuality was acceptable, why would good have created Eve? Did he just want some diversity around? God wanted the people he created to procreate and that’s something you can’t do with 2 men or 2 women.
He mentions that God hasn’t given him deliverance from his “situation” and has seemingly resorted to the “this must be God’s will” mentality. But it is never God’s will that we stay entangled in and at the mercy of any sin. God will only give us deliverance when we truly want it. Hear me: you also have to do your part in your deliverance. If I’m addicted to crack and I’m asking God to deliver me from it, yet every day I’m going to the same crack house, is that not counter productive? God’s power can only do what we allow it to.
He also talks about marriage and covenant relationships and fornication in a way that make me question where he got his information or understand from. This is another area where the interviewer, Lexi, could have taken the issue to the next level and asked better follow up questions, but missed the mark. Again, he seems to be making more justification for himself in order to live how he wants to live. Lord knows he’s not the first to do this. If we were honest, we probably do it more often than we even realize. That topic is enough by itself for another post.
At the end of the day, there’s a lot about the interview, and the way he’s chosen to live his life, I don’t agree with. I don’t think he should be pastoring while he’s engaging in homosexual relationships or activities because that’s something that could cause a lot of people to trip or stumble — especially when there’s no desire on his part to repent or change his ways. Really though, it doesn’t matter what I or anyone else thinks. While the issue(s) are between him and God, because of the platform that he’s been given, whether it’s by choice or not, he also has some level of personal responsibility to make sure he’s living a life that others can model their lives after. Not that he, or anyone has to be perfect, but when your life impacts thousands, maybe even millions or other people, you can’t just live any kind of way. That’s just part of the responsibility that comes with the platform. We have to understand that.

Joe Abercrombie: Ich bin 34 Jahre alt, habe zwei Töchter, bin welterfahren und verwegen gutaussehend. Ich war einmal – und bin es hin und wieder noch – ein Videoeditor (hauptsächlich Dokumentationen und Livemusik). Ich würde meine Bücher wohl als Unheroische Fantasy beschreiben. So etwas Ähnliches wie „Herr der Ringe trifft LA Confidential“, mit einer Prise schwarzen Humors.
Literatopia: Im Juni (in Deutschland im September) erscheint dein neues Buch Racheklingen. Was erwartet deine Leser? Werden sie alte Bekannte treffen oder bringst du völlig neue Charaktere ein?
Joe Abercrombie: Von Beidem ein bisschen. Racheklingen ist ein eigenständiges Buch, das in derselben Welt angesiedelt ist, wie die First Law Trilogie, allerdings in einem anderen Teil davon, und hat ein paar neue Figuren zu bieten, ein paar Nebencharaktere der Trilogie in wichtigeren Rollen und ein paar bekannte Gesichter im Hintergrund. Es schließt teilweise an das an, was in der Trilogie offen gelassen wurde, ist aber an sich eine unabhängige Geschichte. Die Idee dahinter war, etwas zu schreiben, das für sich als eine Einführung gelesen werden kann, oder im Anschluss an die Trilogie als eine Fortführung des Lebens der Welt. Hoffentlich kann es diese Aufgaben erfüllen und scheitert nicht an beiden…
Literatopia: Die First Law Trilogie ist von männlichen Figuren dominiert. Hat es dir da Spaß gemacht, im nächsten Buch mit Monzcarro Mercatto eine weibliche Hauptperson einzubringen oder war das etwas, auf das du dich nicht sonderlich gefreut hast?
Joe Abercrombie: Es war sicherlich eine kleinere Herausforderung, wenn auch nur, weil die weiblichen Protagonisten eines männlichen Autors immer kritischeren Blicken unterzogen werden, als seine männlichen Charaktere. Und obwohl die Herangehensweise grundsätzlich die Selbe ist, wie bei männlichen Figuren – sie so vielseitig, interessant, lustig, überraschend und lebensecht zu machen, wie ich kann – wird es immer einige Aspekte des Weiblichseins geben, bei denen man als Mann nur raten kann. Außerdem habe ich zwar viel Erfahrung damit, wie sich Männer in Gruppen verhalten, wenn keine Frauen dabei sind, aber weniger, wie sich umgekehrt Frauen in Gruppen verhalten. Das alles kann einen schon verunsichern, lässt einen im Nachhinein an sich zweifeln, mehr, als wenn man eine Figur entwirft, die das gleiche Geschlecht wie man selbst hat. Monza war besonders problematisch, weil sie ja eigentlich die Hauptfigur von Racheklingen ist und dabei einen großen Teil der Geschichte trägt. Die First Law Trilogie war eher ein Ensemblestück mit mehreren Hauptfiguren. Also hat es eine Weile gedauert, bis ich wirklich ein konkretes Bild davon hatte, wer sie ist. Erst, als ich den ersten Entwurf des Buches fertig hatte, habe ich begonnen, mit ihrem Charakter und der Art, in der ich ihn geschrieben hatte, zufrieden zu sein. Dann hieß es, alles zu überarbeiten, was ich mit ihr am Anfang geschrieben hatte, um auch da dem Gesamtkonzept der Figur zu entsprechen.
Literatopia: Monzcarro Mercatto und ihr Rachefeldzug lassen unwillkürlich an Ferro (First Law Trilogie) denken. Haben diese zwei Figuren denn mehr gemeinsam, als ihre Beweggründe?
Joe Abercrombie: Sie sind sicherlich beide harte und ziemlich skrupellose Frauen, die ausschließlich ihre Rache im Kopf und ein ziemlich schweres Leben hinter sich haben. Ferro bleibt allerdings an der Peripherie. Wir lernen sie nicht so gut kennen und was wir doch erfahren ist durchgehend hart und undurchdringlich. Monza hat eine viel zentralere Rolle und ist dadurch viel komplexer. Sie hat ein bisschen mehr menschliche Schwäche an sich.
Literatopia: Die Erwartungen an Racheklingen sind hoch. Inwiefern beeinflusst dich das? Bedeutet das mehr Druck oder spornt dich das zu Höchstleistungen an?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich finde, das bedeutet eindeutig mehr Druck. Es liegen Welten dazwischen, ein Buch als ein Hobby, auf deine Weise zu schreiben und dir dabei so viel Zeit zu lassen, wie du willst, und sich plötzlich ein Konzept und Charaktere einfallen lassen zu müssen und alles in einem bestimmten Zeitrahmen zu realisieren. Für mich war Racheklingen um Einiges schwieriger zu schreiben als die Trilogie, die ich ja seit meiner Teenagerzeit in Gedanken mit mir herumgetragen und entwickelt habe. Ich bin aber sehr glücklich mit dem Resultat, letztendlich, auch, wenn der Arbeitsprozess hart war.
Literatopia: Einer der Gründe, warum deine Leser so gespannt auf Racheklingen warten, ist dein außergewöhnlicher erster Roman Kriegsklingen. Warum glaubst du war dieses Buch so erfolgreich? Reiner Zufall oder doch etwas Anderes?
Joe Abercrombie: Naja, das erste Buch hat sich gut verkauft, als es veröffentlicht wurde, aber ich würde nicht sagen, dass es sofort ein Verkaufsschlager war. Aber mit jedem neuen Buch scheint die gesamte Serie sich besser und besser verkauft zu haben. Ich habe ganz sicher viel Glück mit meinem Verlag in Großbritannien, der das Buch von Anfang an unterstützt und der Serie viel Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit verschafft hat. Es ist auch sicherlich hilfreich, dass die Serie eine Trilogie ist, die innerhalb eines relativ knappen Zeitraumes herausgekommen ist und auf eine Art abgeschlossen wurde, die nicht allzu viele Leute enttäuscht hat. Ansonsten denke ich, kommt der Erfolg einfach von der grundlegenden Brillanz meines Werkes. Ich mach natürlich Witze.
Oder vielleicht doch nicht?
Literatopia: Du hast schon während deiner Studienzeit begonnen, an Entwürfen zu Kriegsklingen zu schreiben, hast aber dann die Arbeit daran abgebrochen und sie erst 2002 wieder aufgenommen. Was war der Grund für diese Unterbrechung? War sie wichtig für die Qualität des Buches?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich habe mit 20 versucht, einige meiner Ideen näher auszuführen, hauptsächlich, um mich im Blindschreiben zu üben, in der Hoffnung, dadurch am Arbeitsmarkt attraktiver zu werden. Unter uns (und euren Lesern) gesagt, es war eher Mist. Die selben Ereignisse, wie am Beginn des veröffentlichten Buches, aber ohne den bestimmten Tonfall, der das Ganze interessant macht. Es hatte keinen Sinn für Humor. Es hatte keinen Charakter. Es hat mich nicht sonderlich begeistert, also bezweifle ich stark, ob es irgendjemand anderen begeistert hätte. Als ich die Arbeit daran wieder angefangen habe, war ich … 28? Ich hatte viel mehr Lebenserfahrung, war um Einiges belesener, und vor allem hatte ich gelernt, mich selbst (und vielleicht Fantasy als Genre) um Vieles weniger ernst zu nehmen. Das Resultat war sofort viel besser (zumindest für meinen Geschmack). Also, ja, die Pause war absolut wichtig. Ohne sie wären die Bücher niemals entstanden, und wenn sie denn entstanden wären, wären sie Mist gewesen.
Literatopia: Mit der First Law Trilogie hast du etwas gänzlich Andersartiges geschaffen. Hast du unterm Schreiben jemals Angst gehabt, nicht den Ansprüchen des Marktes zu entsprechen, indem du eben keine High Fantasy produziert hast?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich habe nur zu meiner eigenen Unterhaltung zu schreiben begonnen, ohne dabei an irgendwelche Vorlieben abseits meiner eigenen zu denken. Erst, als ich einen Entwurf des ersten Buches fertig hatte und versuchte, es zu verkaufen, es an Agenten schickte und Absage nach Absage kassierte, begann ich mir Sorgen zu machen, dass das Buch zu unverkäuflich war. Zu anstößig, zu brutal, zu viele Schimpfworte, eine zu ungewöhnliche Mischung aus düsterem und witzigem Tonfall. Aber ich glaube, der allgemeine literarische Geschmack hat sich in den letzten zehn Jahren oder so sehr verbreitert und mich dadurch in einem ziemlich kommerziellen Bereich zurückgelassen. Was schön ist.
Das Schreiben
Literatopia: Die Cover der deutschen Erstausgaben sind um Einiges einfacher gehalten als die der englischen Originale. Inwieweit hast du ein Mitspracherecht bei der Gestaltung der Buchumschläge? Bist du allgemein mit den Motiven zufrieden oder gibt es welche, die dir ehrlich nicht gefallen?
Joe Abercrombie: Bei den fremdsprachigen Covern habe ich überhaupt kein Mitspracherecht, nicht mal bei der Wahl der Titel, darum ist es immer interessant zu sehen, welche Herangehensweisen sich die unterschiedlichen Verleger für ihre jeweiligen Märkte einfallen lassen. In Deutschland gibt es momentan scheinbar einen sehr ausgeprägten und erfolgreichen Stil für die Cover von epischer Fantasy – einfach gehalten, dunkel, oft mit einer Waffe im Vordergrund und einem kurzen, griffigen Titel, der die gesamte Serie lang immer wieder aufgenommen wird. Die Bücher von Markus Heitz und Bernhard Hennen sehen sich nicht unähnlich und ich nehme an, dass diese Signale die Leser auf die Bücher aufmerksam machen, die sie mögen, was ja so sein soll.
Ganz ehrlich gefallen mir die britischen Cover (bei denen ich ein wenig mitwirken kann, vor allem bei Racheklingen) sehr. Sie geben meinen Büchern ein einzigartiges Aussehen. Es ist schwer, bei den deutschen Covern wirklich enthusiastisch zu werden, weil die viel genretypischer sind. Aber ob ich sie mag oder nicht, künstlerisch, tut eigentlich nichts zur Sache. Vor allem mag ich Cover, die Bücher gut verkaufen. Bücherschreiben ist meine Aufgabe, sie zu verkaufen ist Sache der Verleger und man muss darauf vertrauen, dass die ihren Markt kennen und eine Vorgehensweise entwickeln, die funktioniert. Dem Erfolg nach zu urteilen, den Heyne mit den Büchern in Deutschland hat, kennen die ihren Markt.
Literatopia: Kriegsklingen, Feuerklingen und Königsklingen umfassen insgesamt 2400 Seiten. Woher hast du die Idee für so eine komplexe Serie genommen? Hat dich etwas Bestimmtes inspiriert, wie zum Beispiel ein Buch oder ein Ereignis? Wie hast du es geschafft, so lange bei der Sache zu bleiben und durchzuhalten? Gab es jemals Momente, in denen du gedacht hast „Ich kann das nicht, ich kann nicht mehr“?
Joe Abercrombie: Es ist großteils meine Reaktion auf die klassische epische Fantasy, die ich als Jugendlicher gelesen habe – Herr der Ringe, natürlich, aber auch viele andere Dinge. Ich glaube, man nimmt sich Ideen von allem, was man liest, sieht oder erlebt und mag, oder überhaupt nicht mag. Ich bin von Filmen und vom Fernsehen fast genauso stark beeinflusst, wie von Büchern, und ich lese in letzter Zeit auch viel über Geschichte, also kommen auch einige Ideen von dieser Lektüre.
Zum Dranbleiben; ich habe am Anfang hobbymäßig geschrieben, habe den Prozess sehr genossen und war wirklich zufrieden und überrascht mit dem Ergebnis – es schien ein Eigenleben zu haben. Das hat mich bis zum Ende des ersten Buches gebracht. Ich habe ein bisschen von der Begeisterung verloren, als ich im Jahr nach der Fertigstellung von Kriegsklingen die Absagen der Agenten kassierte, aber ich habe sogar dann weiter am zweiten Buch geschrieben, wenn auch ohne viel Begeisterung und in schleppendem Tempo. Ich habe nie wirklich das Gefühl gehabt, aufgeben zu wollen, obwohl ich zugeben muss, dass ich, als ich knapp davor war, die Trilogie zu beenden, plötzlich von der Erkenntnis überwältigt war, ein bis zwei Bücher im Jahr schreiben zu müssen, bis ans Ende meines Lebens, wenn ich das hier professionell machen wollte… Das ist ein ziemlich entmutigender Gedanke, aber man muss das einfach schrittweise angehen, einen Plan, eine Zeile, eine Szene, ein Kapitel, ein Buch, ein Projekt nach dem anderen.
Literatopia: Wann und wie hast du zu schreiben begonnen? Hast du dich einfach plötzlich hingesetzt und beschlossen, es zu versuchen? Oder war das eine langsamere Entwicklung; hast du Geschichten aufgeschrieben, die du dir ausgedacht hast, um sie festzuhalten und später zu überarbeiten? Wie haben deine ersten Versuche ausgesehen?
Joe Abercrombie: Abgesehen von dem einen erfolglosen Versuch mit zwanzig, mein Fantasymeisterwerk zu schreiben, und ein paar frühen Werken habe ich bis Ende zwanzig nie ernsthaft versucht, zu schreiben. Ich habe das zwar immer tun wollen, gespürt, dass ich es vielleicht kann, aber ich habe hauptsächlich damit begonnen, weil mein Job mir viel Freizeit gelassen hat und manchmal Tage oder Wochen zwischen Aufträgen lagen, und ich gefunden habe, dass ich ein nützlicheres Projekt brauche, als Computerspiele, um mich zu beschäftigen. Ich habe dann wieder versucht, zu schreiben, hab die Ergebnisse sehr interessant gefunden, und so ist das entstanden.
Literatopia: Wie gehst du einen neuen Roman an? Hast du da Notizzettel, Charakterprofile und Plotentwürfe schon sorgfältig ausgeführt oder setzt du dich einfach hin, schreibst und lässt die Geschichte sich so entwickeln, wie es dir gerade in den Sinn kommt?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich plane ziemlich sorgfältig. Insbesondere bin ich mir meistens schon über das Ende einer Geschichte im Klaren, bevor ich anfange. Ohne Plan mit dem Schreiben zu beginnen wäre für mich ein bisschen so, als ob man beginnen würde, ein Haus ohne Vorzeichnungen zu bauen und dabei die Ziegel da aufeinander stapelt, wo sie im Moment ganz gut hinzupassen scheinen – wahrscheinlich mit katastrophalem Ausgang. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass ich Entwürfe mache – wenn ich mit einem Kapitel fertig werde, weicht es meistens nicht stark von dem ab, was ich mir vorstelle, weil ich mir den Tonfall, die Handlung, die es umfassen muss, detailliert überlegt habe. Aber ich mache natürlich noch einige Überarbeitungsdurchgänge, wenn ich mit einem Kapitel, einem Teil, dem Buch fertig bin. Man kann immer alles noch ein bisschen verfeinern.
Literatopia: Fantasy ist dein liebstes Genre. Was ist es, das dich daran so fasziniert? Ist es die Möglichkeit, neue Welten erschaffen und Übersinnliches aufgreifen zu können, oder etwas ganz anderes?
Joe Abercrombie: Das ist eine interessante Frage, weil ich viel interessierter an den realistischen Elementen meiner Geschichten bin, als an den phantastischen. Ich habe nicht sehr viel Magie in meiner Welt, nicht viele exotische Kreaturen oder verrückte Schauplätze. Ich denke, ich bin eher an dem interessiert, was Fantasy mit allen anderen Arten der Literatur gemein hat, als an den Dingen, die das Genre abgrenzen. Was mich vielleicht zu einem seltsamen Fantasyautor macht, keine Ahnung. Trotzdem gibt dir Fantasy die Freiheit, Figuren, Ereignisse und Orte ein wenig zu überzeichnen und ich mag diesen Aspekt davon. Du kannst verwenden, was auch immer die Geschichte am dramatischsten macht, was dir stimmig und effektiv vorkommt, ohne sklavischen Nachforschungen, wie es wirklich wäre.
Literatopia: Gibt es eine Interviewfrage, auf die du seit Jahren wartest, ohne, dass sie je gestellt wurde, eine, die du einmal gestellt bekommen möchtest? Wenn ja, welche ist es? Würdest du sie uns auch gleich beantworten?
Joe Abercrombie: Möchten Sie, dass wir Ihnen fünf Millionen Pfund geben, jetzt, steuerfrei?

Allgemeines
Literatopia: Auf deiner Homepage blogst du über dich und deine Bücher. Wie wichtig ist es für dich, mit deinen Lesern in Kontakt zu bleiben? Stehst du gerne im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit oder ist das etwas, bei dem du dich nicht sehr wohl fühlst?
Joe Abercrombie: Schreiben kann manchmal ein ziemlich einsames Gewerbe sein, also bin ich immer sehr fasziniert von Allem, was ein Leser über meine Bücher sagt und ich genieße den Kontakt, den ich durch den Blog habe. Bücher signieren und so weiter – ich kann nicht sagen, dass ich das nicht genieße. Falls auch jemand auftaucht, natürlich.
Literatopia: Du hast als Psychologe angefangen, bist ein Drehbuchautor geworden und schlussendlich ein Autor – wie kam das? Was hat dich auf die Idee gebracht, dich am Drehbuchschreiben zu versuchen?
Joe Abercrombie: Nicht ganz. Ich habe zwar einen Abschluss in Psychologie, habe aber nie praktiziert, dann habe ich ein paar Monate lang Tee gekocht in der TV-Industrie, bin Redaktionsassistent geworden und schlussendlich freischaffender Videoeditor, wobei ich hauptsächlich mit Livemusik und Dokumentationen gearbeitet habe, was ich zehn Jahre oder so gemacht habe. Ich habe nie Drehbücher geschrieben, obwohl ich daran beteiligt war, Skripts für Dokumentationen zu schreiben, was eine wichtige Erfahrung war, denke ich. Wenn man da Experten bei der Arbeit zusieht, bekommt man einen Einblick, wie man Dinge auf die wichtigsten Worte reduziert. Genau deshalb schreibe ich riesige Türstopperromane…
Literatopia: Glaubst du, dass man als Drehbuchautor Vorteile beim Entwickeln einer packenden Geschichte hat? Würdest du sagen, dass deine Erfahrungen mit Psychologie und Drehbuchschreiben verantwortlich für deinen Erfolg als Autor sind?
Joe Abercrombie: Da würde ich euch auf die letzte Antwort verweisen. Drehbuchschreiben nicht so sehr, aber die Erfahrung beim Editieren ist bisher sicher nützlich gewesen. Für den Erfolg verantwortlich? Vielleicht ein kleines bisschen, aber sicher nicht ausschließlich. Aber ein paar wichtige Dinge, die die Arbeit als Videoeditor dich lehrt, von irgendwelchen technischen Fähigkeiten abgesehen, sind, als Teil eines Teams zu arbeiten, nicht so viel Wert auf jedes kleine Detail zu legen, und mit der Person klar zu kommen, die im Sessel neben dir sitzt. Alles Dinge, von denen es nur gut sein kann, sie als Autor zu können.
Literatopia: Was hältst du von Creative Writing Kursen, wie sie an manchen englischsprachigen Universitäten und Colleges angeboten werden? Findest du sie nützlich oder Zeitverschwendung?
Joe Abercrombie: Sehr schwer zu sagen, da ich nie einen solchen Kurs gemacht habe und ich nicht genau weiß, was die dort lehren oder was mit einbezogen wird. So gesehen ist es offensichtlich nicht unbedingt erforderlich, einen Creative Writing Kurs zu besuchen, um ein Autor zu werden. Ich denke, der Nutzen wird immer unterschiedlich sein, bezogen darauf, ob sie deine Schreibweise verbessern oder dir Möglichkeiten zur Publikation geben. Ich kenne einige Kurse, die eine sehr gute Bilanz haben, was das Hervorgehen erfolgreicher Autoren angeht.
Zukunft
Literatopia: Was können deine Leser von dir in Zukunft erwarten? Wirst du bei Fantasy bleiben oder auch mal etwas Neues ausprobieren? Und die wichtigste Frage: Werden wir Glokta, Logan und Bayaz jemals wieder sehen?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich möchte nicht ausschließen, auch mal in anderen Genres zu schreiben, aber im Moment bin ich sehr zufrieden mit Fantasy und mit der Welt und den Figuren, mit denen ich bereits arbeite. Mir gefällt die Vorstellung von Büchern, die sich auf eine größere Welt und übergreifendere Themen beziehen, aber auch einzeln gelesen werden können, in denen Figuren, die wir vorher nur flüchtig gekannt haben, in den Vordergrund gestellt werden, so dass wir wirklich sehen können, was sie bewegt, während andere, die wir gut kennen, im Hintergrund bleiben. Ich werde wahrscheinlich mindestens drei eigenständige Bücher schreiben, bevor ich vielleicht wieder daran denke, eine weitere Trilogie zu schreiben. Was Glokta, Logen und Bayaz betrifft, wage ich zu behaupten, dass sie in Zukunft vielleicht hie und da auftauchen werden. Ob sie noch einmal Hauptfiguren sein werden, kann ich nicht sagen. Ich würde nie etwas ausschließen, das vielleicht meine Bücher verkauft…

Leserfrage: Glokta ist eine sehr herausragende Figur. Es ist oft der Fall, dass die lustigsten und skurrilsten Charaktere, die die größte Aufmerksamkeit des Autors bekommen haben, auch einige autobiographische Züge haben. Wie viel Abercrombie steckt in Glokta? Oder gibt es einen ganz anderen Protagonisten, der dir noch näher kommt?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich denke, in allen Figuren steckt ein ziemliches bisschen Abercrombie, da ja alles, was sie sagen und denken, auf die eine oder andere Weise von mir ausgeht. Ich denke, sie stellen alle eine andere Seite von mir dar, natürlich sehr übertrieben. Was irgendwie ein etwas beunruhigender Gedanke ist. Aber durch der Art, wie seine Figur geschrieben ist – seine Gedanken in kursiv – kommen wir besonders nahe an Gloktas Denkprozesse heran, also denke ich, dass man durch ihn ganz besonders nahe an mich herankommt.
Das ist ein wirklich beunruhigender Gedanke…
Leserfrage: Wie lautete die Kernaussage der Kritik, die dich bisher am meisten geärgert hat?
Joe Abercrombie: Jede Besprechung, die nicht kriecherisch positiv ist, ist unerträglich für mich. Aber ich denke, Kritik ärgert einen nur dann richtig, wenn man weiß, dass sie ein ganz kleines bisschen wahr ist.
Leserfrage: Wie bist du darauf gekommen, einem verkrüppelten Folterknecht eine tragende Rolle zukommen zu lassen? War das plötzliche Inspiration oder geheime Affinität?
Joe Abercrombie: Da ist nichts Geheimes an meiner Affinität. Glokta denkt von allen Figuren am meisten so wie ich. Aber in gewisser Weise war es plötzliche Eingebung – er war der letzte Protagonist, der in meinem Kopf Gestalt angenommen hat und ist recht schnell aufgetaucht. Er war nicht einmal in der Originalfassung des Buches, die ich mit 20 geschrieben habe. Die anderen Figuren habe ich alle über lange Jahre auf verschiedene Art mit mir herumgetragen und weiterentwickelt, in einigen Fällen seit meiner Kindheit. Also denke ich, man kann sagen, Glokta ist die reiftse Schöpfung in der Besetzung.
Leserfrage: Hast du ein Vorbild? Welche Art von Büchern und von welchen Autoren liest du gerne?
Joe Abercrombie: Ich würde nicht sagen, dass ich beim Schreiben ein wirkliches Vorbild habe. Ich mag alle Bücher, die augenscheinlich ehrlich und wahrheitsgetreu sind, die etwas Aufrichtiges über Leute zu sagen haben. Die offenbar aus echter Erfahrung heraus geschrieben sind und nicht nur die selben alten Klischees breittreten. Das meiste von dem, was ich in letzter Zeit lese, ist Verschiedenes aus der Geschichte. Non-Fiction, großteils. Das echte Leben ist of bei weitem bizarrer als die seltsamsten Phantasien.
Leserfrage: Woher stammt der Name Abercrombie? Denkst du, dass er ein passender Name für einen Fantasyautor ist? Ist es vielleicht ein Pseudonym, das eine spezielle Bedeutung für dich hat?
Joe Abercrombie: Er kommt ursprünglich aus Schottland und bedeutet, glaube ich, „Mündung des gekrümmten Flusses“. Passender Name für einen Fantasyautor? Keine Ahnung, eigentlich, es ist der Name, mit dem ich geboren wurde. Ich wurde dazu angeregt, ein kürzeres, eingängigeres Pseudonym auszusuchen, das vielleicht leichter auf ein Cover passt, aber ich habe beschlossen, bei meinem eigenen Namen zu bleiben. Alles andere wäre mir ein bisschen seltsam vorgekommen…
Leserfrage: Planst du deine Hauptfiguren bis ins letzte Detail; weißt du alles über sie? Oder lässt du einige Dinge unklar, um selbst mal überrascht zu werden und, wenn nötig, der Geschichte eine andere Richtung geben zu können?
Joe Abercrombie: Normalerweise habe ich die Rolle einer jeden Figur in der Geschichte schon sehr sorgfältig geplant, wenn ich zu schreiben beginne; ich habe eine Vorstellung von ihrer Vorgeschichte, ihrem Aussehen, ihrer Persönlichkeit und meiner Herangehensweise an das Schreiben aus ihrer Sicht. Aber natürlich entwickeln sich diese Dinge unterm Arbeiten, oft ganz grundlegend, und ich bin immer bereit, nach einer guten Idee zu greifen, die mir vielleicht mit Glück kommt. Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass solche Ideen der Geschichte eine radikal andere Richtung geben, aber sie helfen der Geschichte vielleicht überzeugender oder unterhaltsamer der Richtung zu folgen, die ich für sie schon geplant habe.

Kim Heechul who had debuted as an actor through KBS drama “Sharp 2″ in 2005 in a recent interview with Starnews has said that it had taken him a lot of time to remember all the name of SJ’s members.
Kim Heechul said “I had a lot of hard time with Super Junior’s members because I spend too much time on acting”, “There was a time I was in a drama so I couldnt go to practice room. So when I came to there after a long time, the other members were like ‘Hyung, we had practiced with your’s spot left blank. You simply can join in later’ and ‘I only think about you but you just see the members that you’re close with, I feel so sad”
He continued with “In the restroom, my tears pour out without knowing” and “I feel both sorry and thankful to other members at the same time”, “I only think about myself that need doing well. I’m so happy that I can be with the members like that”
In fact recently, Super Junior have had a summer vacation in Kangwondo, they had time to share things that they can talk to each other because of busy schedule and also, strengthen their true friendship.
Kim Heechul said “Now the teamwork of Super Junior is the best”, “I’m a person who has change my own mind, the wall (that I built around my heart) has been dissapeared completely and because I have them (the other members) who are really like a family that I truly feel happy and thankful every second” showing his love for his members.
